Ir. Zafrul Mahmood
Ir. Zafrul Mahmood, P. Eng, 50 born in Petaling Jaya, Selangor received his Primary and Secondary Education from St John’s Institution, Kuala Lumpur.He pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at the Northern Arizona University, USA under a Petronas scholarship programme.
Zafrul started his career in the engineering consultancy field at BW Perunding Sdn Bhd in 1988. He then moved to Engineering and Environmental Consultants Sdn Bhd and subsequently Kumpulan Jurutera Maju Sdn Bhd as the Head of Highway Division in 1993.
In response to the encouragement of the Government to assist 100% Bumiputra Engineering Consultants, Zafrul co – founded KL Prima Consult Sdn Bhd, a Civil and Structure Engineering Consultancy practice in 1996. He was an Executive Director leading the Transportation Division overseeing all roads and infrastructure projects.
After successfully completing 10 years in growing the business, Zafrul left engineering consultancy practice to pursue project management out of Malaysia. He joined Parsons International, Qatar where he was assigned to oversee part of the New Doha International Airport Project. He then joined Opus International Malaysia Berhad, a subsidiary of the UEM Group, as General Manager where he led the project management team in leading the PLUS, 116km Cikampek to Palimanan Toll Highway in Indonesia and UEM Group investment in the New Daru Port in Papua New Guinea.
Subsequently, he was with Scomi Engineering Berhad as the Civil Construction Head based in Mumbai overseeing the Mumbai Monorail Project. He was then appointed as Project Director with the Port of Tanjung Pelepas to lead and oversee the expansion of berth, container yard and dredging/ reclamation projects.
He then joined the AlloyMtd Group as Executive Vice President for Special Projects. His key portfolio was to grow the company’s construction and precast concrete business in Saudi Arabia. He was instrumental in securing to kick start the setting up of a precast concrete product factory in Jeddah. He also led the team in setting up a Branch Office in Muscat, Oman and tendering works within the Middle East Region.
In July 2015, he was appointed Executive Chairman of Ranhill Bersekutu Sdn Bhd with the primary task of turning around the business of the company.
Zafrul is empanelled in the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA) as an Arbitrator and Adjudicator where he occasionally conducts arbitration and adjudication proceedings of construction disputes. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, United Kingdom.
